NAFARI History

Pune in Maharashtra has been emerging as a focal point for Agro and Food Business since last 20-25 years. To keep pace with the cyber era, households in all big cities opt for readymade food products or instant mixes. At the same time several new processing units are coming up in and around Pune. There was strong need for a modern accredited food-testing lab in Pune as industry was dependent upon outside labs, which did not have full spectrum of modern testing equipment and facilities. Sizable number of wholesalers, distributors, stockiest, and commission agents were also interested in analysing food products before accepting them for onward distribution and sale. The issue of setting up of "Food Testing Lab" in Pune was being discussed for several years at various levels without any fruit full solution.

Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA) was promoting Food sector activities through its Agriculture & Agribusiness Sub-Committee. MCCIA, established in 1934 is recognized as one of the most pro-active Chamber of Commerce in India. The Chamber acts as a nodal agency and resource centre for industry, trade, commerce and agriculture. To maintain pace of development in the food cluster, MCCIA and COFIT, in association with SIDBI, worked on the initiatives under UNIDO's Cluster Development Programme and set up of a state-of-the-art Food Testing Laboratory called National Agricultural & Food Analysis & Research Institute (NAFARI) in Pune, Maharashtra to help Food Processing Manufacturers and long-term sustainability of food products.
